Voting Irregularities Spur Lawsuit
Allegations of voting fraud will have some Leflore County elections officials defending their actions in court. As MPB’s Stephen Koranda reports, a suit was filed in Leflore county circuit court Court.
The Mississippi Republican Party filed suit against the Leflore County election commission and a poll manager for allegedly violating state election law. The suit includes claims that workers at a Greenwood polling place stopped poll watchers from monitoring the election and that assistance and instruction were offered for voters who did not request help. Mississippi Republican Party Chairman Brad White says even though the election is over, it’s still important to pursue voting irregularities.
The poll Manager named in the suit Gail Griggs, would not comment for this story. Chair of the Leflore County Election Commission wouldn’t make a statement on tape, but said he believes elections in Leflore County are fair and impartial. Complaints regarding poll workers are common says Secretary of State Delbert Hoseman, including concerns over where poll watchers are stationed.
Mississippi Attorney General Jim Hood says the state’s laws regarding poll watchers can be interpreted in different ways.
Allegations of unnecessary voter assistance like those in Leflore County are difficult to investigate and prosecute, says hood.
Under state law voters can request assistance because of blindness, disability or illiteracy. I’m sk for MPB news.
