Mississippi Public Broadcasting announces 2010 PBS KIDS GO!® Writers Contest Winners |

JACKSON, Miss. - Mississippi Public Broadcasting (MPB) announces the winners of the 2010 PBS KIDS GO! Writers Contest. The 12 winners from across the state entered their own stories with original illustrations for judging and placed first, second and third in their grades:
Kindergarten First Place: Morgan Gerrie, Moss Point, “Why Are You Cryin’ Lion?” Second Place: Jack Lancaster, Lucedale, “That Man” Third Place: Sadie Eleen Pohl, Bay St. Louis, “We Used To Bounce”
First Grade First Place: Reed Preston Lindsey, Booneville, “Roscoe Wants a Red Feather” Second Place: Leland Vickery, Jackson, “The Happy New Orleans Car” Third Place: Gideon McKeon, Diamondhead, “Duck and Egg, Squiggy and Whitey’s Rocket Adventure”
Second Grade First Place: Austin Thornton, Meridian, “The Mysterious Sea Monster” Second Place: Fisher Iseminger, Natchez, “Princess and Her Gum Bow” Third Place: Mary Hollis Gee, Horn Lake, “The Unycorn That Lost Her Horn”
Third Grade First Place: Victoria Gong, Vicksburg, “The Legend of the Unicorns” Second Place: Elisa Ann Stocking, Olive Branch, “A Tail of My Big Sister” Third Place: Peyton Killingsworth, Moss Point, “Adventures on Mount Everest”
According to Darrell Lee, Director of Instructional Resources at MPB, more than a 100 stories were entered by children across the state.
“This year’s PBS KIDS GO! Writers Contest, formerly known as the Reading Rainbow Young Illustrator’s Contest, was well received by both parents and kids in Mississippi,” said Lee. “The Contest gave children in grades K-3 the opportunity to explore and develop their creativity in ways they never thought possible. Mississippi Public Broadcasting would like to thank all the winners for submitting such outstanding entries.”

Each of the state winners will be honored at a special reception to be held at MPB studios on June 11, 2010 where they will have their stories recorded for radio/television broadcasts at a later date and receive special prizes for their achievements. Afterwards, each winner will be treated to a party at Pump It Up in Flowood, Miss.
First place winners’ stories will advance to the national competition where a panel of renowned judges will identify the national winners. Winners will be announced and national prizes, including laptops, digital cameras and MP3 players, will be awarded in summer 2010.
