Four Emmy Award Nominations and a Parent’s Choice Award for Mississippi’s “Between the Lions” TV Series |
|
“Between the Lions” children’s television show co-produced by Mississippi Public Broadcasting (MPB) received four Emmy® Award nominations and is a 2008 Parent’s Choice Award recipient. The series, filmed at the MPB studios in Jackson, Miss., aims to develop literacy skills among young kids and promote a love of reading.
The Emmy® Award nominations are in the categories of Outstanding Pre-School Children’s Program, Writing, Music Direction and Outstanding Achievement in Art Direction/Set Decoration/Scene Design.
Intended to help parents make knowledgeable choices about which new products are right for children, the Parents' Choice Awards is the nation's oldest nonprofit program designed to recognize quality in children's media. As an award recipient, “Between the Lions” will proudly display the Parent’s Choice seal recognizing its contribution to the education and development of children.
The six-time Emmy® Award-winning public broadcasting series was awarded the sliver medal at the 2008 Hugo Awards. Held at the International Chicago Film Festival, the Hugo Awards is a very competitive event and attracts entries from all over the world.
“Affirmation by professional peers is always satisfying. For ‘Between the Lions,’ MPB has both educational and entertainment standards to meet. Our recent awards and Emmy nominations prove that we exceed in both areas,” said Ann Copland, Executive Producer for “Between the Lions” and Executive Deputy Director for MPB.
“Between the Lions” is a PBS KIDSâ series in partnership with Mississippi Public Broadcasting, WGBH-TV Boston and Sirius Thinking Ltd of New York. Developed in consultation with the nation’s top reading and literacy experts, the series presents a comprehensive approach to reading instruction. The program showcases the power and pleasure of reading and includes segments that foster language development and early literacy skills. Each episode addresses the five key areas of reading instruction: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and text comprehension.
