Description of Program

Mississippi Public Broadcasting offers internships to students enrolled in an institution of higher learning. The program is specifically designed to provide training and experience for students interested in public broadcasting. MPB internships are non-salaried.

Application for Internship

Students must complete the Student Internship Application form and obtain the signature of the Department Chairperson prior to each semester. The MPB coordinator processes applications and assigns each student to a MPB department. The department supervisor will conduct interviews, assign and supervise the student’s tasks. EVALUATIONS

Supervisors will provide the intern with a verbal evaluation throughout the internship. This will serve as a gauge of the student's progress. Student will receive written evaluations at the conclusion of their internship based on their university's requirements. It is not the policy of Mississippi Public Broadcasting to assign grades, however MPB will work with students and their respective universities to fulfill necessary requirements for academic credit. MPB reserves the right to terminate any internship at any time.

DESCRIPTION OF INTERNSHIP POSITIONS

 

COMMUNICATIONS

The Communications Division is responsible for statewide publicity in all media, advertising, and public relations projects.  Internship work is varied from writing to media relations to administrative.  Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to drafting press releases, conducting research, updating and maintaining media lists, contacting media, and providing support at special events. The intern is expected to perform basic office duties. Work in the Communications Department at MPB involves contact with all the divisions of the agency, offering interns a unique opportunity to become acquainted with Mississippi Public Broadcasting as a whole.

COMPUTER INFORMATION SERVICES

The Informational Services Department helps the agency meet its goals more efficiently using any technology available. The student will assist the department in maintaining existing systems related to the agency data network including services, work stations and core network equipment.

CONTENT (PRODUCING AND DIRECTING)

The student desiring to intern in this area will be introduced to script writing, videography and editing. Requirements include research, interviews and data collecting for series or specials.

EDUCATIONAL SERVICES

Mississippi Public Broadcasting is seeking an Intern to work in the Education Services Department to assist with various community outreach projects initiatives.  The successful candidate must be currently in pursuit of an Associate, Bachelor or Master’s Degree from a local Mississippi college or university.  The internship is unpaid and will require 20 hours of work.  The Candidate must have exceptional communication skills and be creative. 

NEWS AND PUBLIC AFFAIRS

The News and Public Affairs Department provides statewide news and public affairs programming for television and radio. Students will gain exposure in all phases of newsgathering procedures.

PRODUCTION

The television production and direction internship is designed to provide an introduction and familiarization to television production. The student will work in the many facets of day-to-day studio and remote productions including control room operations, studio camera operations, videography, set design, lighting and construction. Students will also be exposed to pre-production functions such as scripting, budgeting and scheduling.

RADIO

MPB Radio was established to provide radio programming for the purpose of educating, entertaining and expanding the culture and social awareness of listeners.  The intern will be involved in radio production, copy writing, promotion, programming and operating broadcast audio equipment
