A high rate of people without insurance means many Mississippians do not get basic health screenings.

Mississippi leaders are reaching out to young people in hopes of lowering the state's teen pregnancy rate.

The higher than normal reports of flu have come in from Alabama, Louisiana, Tennessee, Texas and Mississippi. And even though the cases have been relatively mild, Dr. Michael Jhung with the Centers for Disease Control says the organization remains cautiously optimistic.

"Open enrollment is the one time of year when all people with Medicare can see what new benefits are available through Medicare and what the changes are that they can look at."

Supporters of the Affordable Care Act are touting the law's potential impact on minority communities.

"Because we want victims to be empowered with the knowledge. And so if a victim decides to press charges they can. If they chose not to then the role of the center will be to provide services to help them through the process of healing whether its therapy or advocacy."

The state of Mississippi has officially told the federal government that it will run an insurance exchange
