The family of an openly-gay African-American mayoral candidate who was murdered is calling on the federal government to get involved in the case.

Police say Marco McMillian, a candidate for mayor of Clarksdale, was murdered by Lawrence Reed in February.

However, the family's attorney Daryl Parks says there are still too many unanswered questions about why and how McMillian was murdered.

“Clearly, something major happened here that has not been explained by the evidence that has come out so far in this case. But probably most importantly, what you have is that there has been no indication from those conducting this investigation about what they have found out thus far and we are two months into this investigation,” Parks said.

McMillian's burned and beaten body was found on a Mississippi River levee the autopsy reports says McMillian died from a lack of oxygen but does not offer any further explanation.

Family members are planning a press conference in Clarksdale today to increase their demand that the FBI get involved.
