Mississippi Gun Owners Oppose Stricter Regulations

The federal task force aimed at curbing gun violence in the U.S. is expected to make recommendations to the President today. MPB's Daniel Cherry reports, gun enthusiasts in Mississippi are voicing their concerns.

At a weekend gun show in Jackson thousands of Mississippians lined up to buy guns, ammunition, and equipment. Anticipation of tighter regulations from Washington drove the crowd up to record levels. Daniel  Brown is a firearm dealer from Olive Branch. He says his customers have serious concerns about potential regulations.

"I hear that all the time. I get asked that five or six times a day in my store, 'What are they going to do?' They're going to go after the magazines, the high count mags. That's where they're going to get us, and the ammo, they're going to tax the ammo."

"Do I need one? Do I want one? No. But do I want you to have the capability of getting it for what you want and need? Yeah I'm all for that. I just don't need it, but I'll fight to the death for you to have the right to get it."
In fact, the price of various kinds of ammunition is already at an all time high. There are several factors, mostly, high demand is draining supply, and driving up prices. Gun enthusiasts at the weekend show were snapping up ammo by the thousands. Greg from Raymond was at the show looking to buy another semi-automatic rifle. He doesn't think tighter gun restrictions will help the problem.

"Just like drugs are illegal for a law-abiding citizen to own, but it's still not going to get them off the street. They'll be on the black market."

Over at a handgun counter, Gary Walker of Clinton is looking for a new pistol for concealed carry. He doesn't own any of the high powered, semi-automatic rifles like the AR-15, which have been under scrutiny, but he's not against them.

Gun advocates say semi-automatic rifles, high-count magazines, and ammunition are the most likely targets for additional regulations. Daniel Cherry...MPB News.
